A snapped spring is the single most common garage door failure in Hutto — and on streets where every house went up the same year, they tend to go within months of each other. We measure the door, fit the right spring off the truck, and tell you the price before a wrench moves. Any hour, any day.
Tell us what the door did — a tech calls or texts back, usually within the hour.
Four things a door does when a spring lets go — and the two symptoms people mistake for a spring when they aren't.
Hutto didn't grow gradually — it went from a farm town of about 1,200 people in 1990 to more than 30,000, and it did it in a handful of building pushes. Whole streets in Star Ranch, Emory Farms and Glenwood were framed within the same twelve months, which means their garage doors were hung within the same twelve months, on springs from the same pallet, rated for the same number of cycles.
A builder-grade torsion spring is typically rated around 10,000 cycles. A two-car household opening the door four times a day burns that in roughly seven years. So the calls arrive in clusters: we'll fix three springs on one street in a fortnight, and the neighbours all say the same thing — "the house across the road had theirs done last month."
Central Texas puts a spring through a wider temperature swing than its rating assumes — 100°F+ attic-adjacent garages in August, then a hard freeze in January. Steel that expands and contracts through that fatigues faster, which is why a spring that "should" last a decade in a mild climate often goes at year seven here.
The insulated steel doors going onto newer Riverwalk and Hutto Crossing builds are noticeably heavier than the single-layer doors on 2005-era homes. Heavier door, more load per cycle — and if a previous repair fitted a generic spring rather than one matched to the door's real weight, it'll fail early regardless of age. We measure before we fit for exactly that reason.
On the truck — spring sizes we carry
Look above the closed door. A single fat spring wound around a steel shaft across the header is a torsion spring, and that's what almost every door built in Hutto's subdivisions since the 1990s uses. Two long thin springs running back along the horizontal tracks, one per side, are extension springs — mostly older homes around the Co-op District and out toward Coupland. We carry both.
Don't force it the rest of the way. With a broken spring the door is dead weight, and the only thing holding it up may be the opener's gear or a jammed roller. If the car has to come out, call first — we'll talk you through whether it can be safely blocked, or get a tech to you. The phone is answered around the clock.
You can buy one. The problem is that a spring not matched to your door's exact weight, height and wire size either won't balance the door or will burn through its cycles in a fraction of the rated life. The bigger issue is the winding — a torsion spring holds hundreds of pounds of stored energy and the bars have to be handled properly. This is the one garage repair genuinely worth handing over.
The tech measures the spring and the door on site and gives you the exact number before anything is touched. It depends on the wire size and length your door actually needs and whether it runs one spring or two. No charge to hear the price, and nothing starts until you say go.
